Bio

Born in Mexico to Spanish immigrants, Gonzalo grew up between Mexico and Spain . He studied Fine Art Photography in Mexico City at the Centro Cultural Arte Contemporáneo under Teacher Saul Serrano. After graduating from a BA in Communication Sciences, he started working in film as a creative producer for HBO Ole and Wild Studios. In 1998 he moved to London to study at the London Film School. Since most of the students wanted to Direct, Gonzalo was able to shoot more than 20 shorts, and documentaries. After that, he was accepted at the American Film Institute’s conservatory in Los Angeles. At AFI he completed the Master of Fine Arts program in Cinematography. His thesis film Fueling the fire was selected in more than forty festivals, winning fifteen. Some of his early work includes feature films “7 Dias ” and “El Estudiante” which earned him nominations for best cinematography at the Gabriel Figueroa Award given by the Mexican Film Press. “El Estudiante” was also the longest playing film on theaters in Mexico ever. “The Devil inside” shot in Bucharest, Romania, and Rome, was #1 movie in the box office in January 2012, becoming one of the most profitable horror films ever. He also has collaborated with Visual Artist Doug Aitken in “Black Mirror”, “Gimmie” for the Rolling Stones Hyde Park concert, and was asked by Doug to direct and shoot a piece for the NYT “Acid Modernism”. Another collaboration with Doug Aitken was “Song 1”. Which was projected as a 360-degree film in the facade of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, and tour as a film exhibit all over the world.

Other recent film projects include Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, additional photography for “Chavez” and “Desierto”, by Diego Luna and Jonas Cuarón. His latest film Carrie Pilby screened at the TorontoInternational Film Festival. His TV work includes “Believe” from Alfonso Cuaron and JJ. Abrahams, and Person of Interest, created by Jonathan Nolan and JJ Abrahams, Seal Team, Happy! and Get Christie Love pilots. Gonzalo has shot 4 seasons of the critically acclaimed show produced by Ridley Scott and Amazon Studios, The Man in the High Castle, which is to date, the most streamed show on Amazon, and it has recently earned him 2 American Cinematographer Society Awards back to back Nominations, and more recently an Emmy nomination for 2019. In the summer of 2018 Gonzalo ventured into directing, and finished an episode of Seal Team, and recently completed 3 more. Durning the Summer he shot two episodes of Outer Banks for Netflix, and 7 for Season 2. He is a member of the International Cinematographer Guild, the DGA, and most recently a member of the Amercian Society of Cinematographers.

He lives in Brooklyn and dedicates his free time doing ultra running and still photography.
